Making Lemonade
Whatever happens in your day-to-day life, especially those little things which you may not have intentionally planned for, like leaving your phone in the back of a taxi, or putting your palm-pilot in the washing machine, there are at least two ways you can react:
1. Blame yourself or someone else (which feels good for a little while)
2. Don’t take it personally – use it as an opportunity to focus on a different aspect of your life.
Personally, we’re in the middle of moving, and for some reason or other (that I don’t fully understand) – we’re not going to have any internet access for about a week.
I could choose to get upset and go and check my emails etc… at my in-laws, or at some funky internet café (do they still exist?)
OR I could use this as an opportunity to get out more – to play in the park, to ride my bike, to go for a picnic in the country, to chat with friends and more importantly to actually spend even more quality time with my lovely other half, and talk, chill and really communicate.
If you’ve stuck in traffic, do you get mad or can you choose to use that time as an opportunity to really chill out?
As a friend told me (repeating something he’d heard at some management session) there are three kinds of people,
1. Optimist, 2. Pessimist and 3. Opportunist.
The Optimist says the Cup is Half full
The Pessimist says it’s Half empty
The Opportunist – take the opportunity to quench his thirst and drinks the Cup.
Every moment you have an opportunity to choose what your reaction is going to be – choose to make Lemonade out of Lemons!
